But Whitney's comeback gig on British soil prompted a mixed response from the fans who had looked forward to her return for so long, with one concert-goer describing it as "the biggest shambles I've ever experienced".

Although other fans described the 46-year-old diva's performance as "brilliant", many more were frustrated by technical hitches such as Whitney's head mic breaking and a 15-minute costume change that drew boos from the restless audience.

It seems that the years of drug addiction and her rocky marriage to the singer Bobby Brown have taken their toll on the performer.

So while her voice managed to hold out, her lack of stamina meant that the show was constantly interrupted for her to catch her breath with water breaks and bantering with the audience.

"Throughout the show, her breathing was an issue. Two numbers in and Whitney was panting," said Colin Paterson, the BBC entertainment reporter who attended the gig.

The concert had been put off three times due to the singer suffering from an upper respiratory infection, which had in turn fuelled rumours in the press that Whitney had returned to a lifestyle of drug and alcohol abuse.

Whitney denied those stories, dismissing them as "ridiculous".

Speaking to the press upon entering the UK last week she said of the press rumours: "At this point I just don't respond. I don't even read it."

"I'm doing what I love to do, which is singing. And the best part is seeing all of my fans around the world," she added.

With a sell-out tour ahead of her, she may need to improve her performances to ensure the fans continue to love her for years to come.

About Acid House Kings

Acid House Kings is a Swedish indie pop band. It was founded in 1991 by Joakim Ödlund (also in the bands Poprace, Double Dan, and Starlet) and brothers Niklas (Red Sleeping Beauty) and Johan Angergård (Club 8, The Legends, Poprace).

With the release of their first album, Pop, Look & Listen, they supposedly decided on a 10 year plan to release an album every five years to have a trilogy of albums released by the year 2002, a plan that eventually worked out exactly as scheduled.

According to plan, they released Advantage Acid House Kings in 1997 and the album proved to be a huge step forward to form their trademark sound of jangly, catchy guitar oriented indie-pop. The album featured Julia Lannerheim as guest vocalist on a couple of songs, who eventually joined the band officially as a full time member in 2001.

In 2002 they released their third album Mondays Are Like Tuesdays And Tuesdays Are Like Wednesdays, again surpassing their previous record in terms of sophistication, with a record filled with breezy, catchy guitar pop tunes.

Their 4th album Sing Along With Acid House Kings was initially released as a limited edition featuring a bonus DVD consisting of instrumental karaoke versions of the complete album, accompanied by home made videos showing the band members doing various everyday tasks.

The critically acclaimed album saw the band further perfecting their sound established on the previous records. In the summer of 2007 they entered the studio again to record their 5th album, initially due to be released in 2008, but then pushed back to 2009.

About Julie Feeney

Julie works as a composer, a singer, a producer, a musician, a songwriter, a theatre artist and as an educator. She composes instrumental music and also songs with full orchestrations. Before her first album she worked mostly with composition of electronic music, and since her first album she has been exploring the orchestral sound-world.

Julie has finished producing her second album, ‘pages’ which she scored this time for voice and orchestra with no midi. She conducted the orchestra and later recorded the singing over the orchestral music. All of the singing and mixing was done athome. Instead of playing lots of instruments like she did on the first album, all of the music was this time played by the orchestra while she did again of the singing, conducting, composing and producing. The orchestra included trumpets, french horns, trombone, vibraphone, clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, violins, violas, cellos, double bass, glockenspiel, sticks and more. Julie spent a considerable amount of time working at the Artists’ Retreat in Annaghmakerrig in County Monaghan working on the words for the work. ‘pages’ will be released in April.

Her instrumental compositions have been for the Crash Ensemble and Icebreaker, and the electronic scores for Corp Feasa contemporary dance company, Loose Canon Theatre Company and for her own one woman shows where she incorporated live singing. She has orchestrated for and conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra string section and she orchestrated ‘13 songs’ for the 65 piece Ulster Orchestra at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast in 2007 when she sang solo with them. She has worked as a theatre artist with Loose Canon Theatre Company; in a one woman show to her own electronic score; and in ‘Slat’ at Galway Arts Festival and in Paris in 2008 at the Centre Culturel Irlandais.

Her debut album ‘13 songs’ won in 2006 the ‘Choice Music Prize - Irish Album of the Year’. She played most of the instruments and did all of the singing, and produced and released the album. After that she signed a record deal and was able finally to pay back all of the money she borrowed to make and it and the first video (seen below which features the Beetle car, her favourite vehicle of all time). Just before her debut album, after graduating from Trinity College Dublin, she worked all over the world as a professional choral singer with various ensembles on numerous cds, dvds and broadcasts. She has her own record label, mittens, called after her mother’s favourite cat. She cannot drive a car.

As an educator Julie has worked at primary, secondary, university and professional development level in music education. A qualified primary teacher she has designed and facilitated workshops all over Ireland, in the U.S. and in Brazil and has published 3 music education CD roms. She lectured in music education at university level for three years. She works part-time as a model.
